Etiquette Analysis: Walking

When walking down the sidewalk, have you ever considered your placement in relation to the person you’re walking with? Specifically, if you’re a woman and you’re walking with a man? I would be surprised if you actively think about this. However, there is an etiquette to this.

“In America it is customary for a man to walk on the curb side when accompanying a lady on the street, but the rule is not so hard and fast as it used to be” - Amy Vanderbilt, 1952, pg. 30

Much like men holding doors for women, I imagine this is a concept that people may object to on principle. And again, I respect that opinion. I, however, kind of like this idea. It feels romantic? Chivalrous? Safe? I do not think this is a necessary rule to abide by but if you’re a man and you’re walking down the sidewalk with me, please position yourself between me and any potential cars careening our way.
