Etiquette Analysis: On Bananas
There is an etiquette for everything. Does this mean you have to know and follow the written etiquette for everything? Absolutely not. But a large part of my “Etiquette Analysis” is based in mere curiosity as to what the doyennes of etiquette believe is correct. So on occasion, I flip through my collection of etiquette books and peruse for advice I didn’t expect to be written out. For example, on bananas:
“When eaten at the table they are peeled, then broken as needed into small pieces and eaten with the fingers” Amy Vanderbilt (1952). Everyday Etiquette, 22.
Truthfully, I think that would be my instinct but in case it isn’t yours, the more you know, right?
