If You Look Good, You Feel Good

Loungewear sales have skyrocketed in recent months as a result of the pandemic, much to my dismay. I am firmly in the camp of if you look good, you feel good and looking good requires real pants.

I recently had surgery (I’m fine!) but as I begrudgingly donned sweatpants for my trip to the hospital, my mother was dressed to the nines. I questioned this - she was going to be sitting in a waiting room for the duration of my surgery, why was she wearing a snazzy blazer, suede pants and stylish boots? And she said “you’re taken more seriously if you’re dressed seriously” and as her daughter was going into surgery, she wanted to be taken seriously.

Clothes matter and not just because of what other people may think of you. Clothes can impact how you feel about yourself. I get dressed every day for me, to make myself feel good. I believe it is especially important to get dressed in the midst of this pandemic, even if you have nowhere to go. It helps maintain a sense of normalcy. You don’t have to wear a dress and heels to lounge about your own space but I promise, if you do, it will make you feel good.

However, I do want to note that dressing well is not the same as dressing expensively. Just because it’s designer does not mean it looks good. You should dress for your style and budget. Find clothes that work for your body and your wallet. Only buy what you actually like, not just because you saw it on instagram or because it’s trendy. Those clothes are not guaranteed to make you feel good.
