Etiquette Analysis: On Dating

Quite obviously dating has changed immensely from Emily Post’s day and most of what she writes is not applicable to dating today.

“How far may a girl run after a man? Cat-like, she may do a little stalking! But “run”? Not a step. The freedom of today allows her to go meet him halfway, but the girl who runs, runs after a man who runs faster” Emily Post (1945). Etiquette, 177.

Clearly the “freedom of today” in the 1940s was hardly what it is today but I think the advice stands. This is not a dating and relationship blog so don’t expect success from following this tip. I just think that meeting people halfway is the key to good relationships, both romantic and platonic. And often times, over-eagerness is off-putting. Give people attention but also space.
